Prophesies Concerning Jesus (Continued 4)

The final days and moments of Jesus Christ’s earthly life were also prophesied hundreds of years before they happened.

Jesus Christ would be beaten

Isaiah chapter 50 verse 6;  I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. (about 800bc)

fulfilled

Matthew chapter 26 verse 67;  Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,

Matthew chapter 27 verse 26;  Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Matthew chapter 27 verse 30;  And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. (about 80ad)

Jesus Christ would be executed by Crucifixion, having His hands and feet pierced

Zechariah chapter 12 verse 10;  “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.  (about 520bc)

Psalm 22 verses 14-18;  I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (about 1000bc)

fulfilled

Matthew chapter 27 verse 35;  And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. (about 80ad)

John chapter 19 verse 18;  There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

John chapter 19 verse 37;  And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” (about 90ad)

Jesus Christ would be thirsty during His Crucifixion

Psalm 22 verse 15;  my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.

Psalm 69 verse 21;  They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. (about 1000bc)

fulfilled

John chapter 19 verses 28-30;  After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the Scripture), “I thirst.”  A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.  When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (about 90ad)

Matthew chapter 27 verse 34;  they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. (about 80ad)

Jesus Christ the Lamb, would not have a broken bone

Jesus Christ was crucified at the time of Passover; a feast the Israelies celebrated and still do in memory of their people’s release from bondage in Egypt.  The sacrificial lambs blood was painted on their door posts and lintels so that the angel of death would pass them by. No bones of the lambs were to be broken.  Likewise, Jesus Christ is the Passover lamb for all who truly believe in Him.

Exodus chapter 12 verse 46;  It (lamb) shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones. (about 1300bc)

Numbers chapter 9 verse 12;  They (Israelies) shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it. (about 1300bc)

Psalm 22 verse 17; I can count all my bones-they stare and gloat over me;

Psalm 34 verse 20;  He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. (about 1000bc)

fulfilled

John chapter 19 verse 31-37;  Since it was the day of preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.  So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” (about 90ad)

Jesus Christ would die alongside thieves

Isaiah chapter 53 verses 9-12;  And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. (about 800bc)

fulfilled

Matthew chapter 27 verse 38;  Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. (about 80ad)

Luke chapter 22 verse 37;  For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” (about 60ad)

Jesus Christ’s dying words were prophesied

Psalm 22 verse 1;  To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

Psalm 31 verse 5;  Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.  (about 1000bc)

fulfilled

Matthew chapter 27 verse 46;  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (about 80ad)

Luke chapter 23 verse 46; Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. (about 60ad)

They would cast lots for Jesus Christ’s garments

Psalm 22 verse 18;  they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (about 1000bc)

fulfilled

John chapter 19 verse 24;  so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, (about 90ad)

Jesus Christ would be buried by a rich man

Isaiah chapter 53 verse 9;  And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. (about 800bc)

fulfilled

Matthew chapter 27 verse 57-60;  When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. (about 80ad)
